A Kona man had an unexpected intruder in his home last week, resulting in injuries that required a trip to the emergency room.

The intruder wasn’t there to rob him. It was an approximately 150-pound pig that broke into his home.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the scary events that unfolded last Wednesday around 12:30 p.m.

“I was in the house having lunch and I heard this weird sound out in the yard and thought it was a ladder falling over or something like that,” he said. “So I got up and went to my front door and saw this pig leaping over our garden and about one second later he is right in front of me on the other side of the door.”

The gentleman said they both looked at each other and the pig started poking at the screen.

“So I stepped back and he went right through the screen door and started to attack. I felt a bump on the leg but thought he just knocked me in the leg,” he recalled.

The pig then went into the living room and the resident tried to stay away from him, but the pig continued to go after him, knocking things over in his pursuit. The pig ended up in the corner of the living room and calmed down a little bit.

The gentleman had a pellet gun he keeps on the back lanai to scare off the occasional pig that wanders into his yard.

“I went and got my pellet gun and came back and shot him in the head from five feet away. It didn’t even faze him,” he said, “So I went back, reloaded and shot him again.”

But once again the pig didn’t even seem to notice he was getting shot.

“I shot him a third time and then he charged towards me. He was about five feet away so I was able to maneuver around,” he explained. “There was a chair so I put it between me and him and he took the chair and went into the kitchen.”

He went on to say that he went on the other side of his kitchen island, trying to get some distance between them. The door to the back lanai was open from when he retrieved the gun and the pig eventually sauntered out.

He said he has never seen a pig be so aggressive without being provoked.

“After the first pause in the living room, I saw blood all over his snout. Turns out it was my blood. After he walked out I went back to the living room and saw blood everywhere. Then I looked at my leg and it had a big gash on it.”

He was able to stop the bleeding himself; he was home alone at the time with his wife in Kauai for a hula competition. He drove to Kaiser where doctors advised him to go to the emergency room at Kona Community Hospital because of the possibility of muscle damage. By that time, the adrenalin rush was wearing off and he was getting queasy with sweats and feeling like he was going to faint, so he had a friend drive him to the ER.

Luckily there were no torn muscles so doctors were able to stitch him up and sent him home with antibiotics.

He said he had to stay off his foot because of swelling, but he and his wife are leaving for the mainland today, so he’s hoping it has healed enough to take the stitches out.

He said he has never heard of this happening before.

“I think he was a lone boar who was just checking out a new territory,” he said.
